Performance Solutions

Why SAXON HALL architecture

Sometimes a design doesn’t fit the standard ‘Deemed-to-Satisfy’ rules in the National Construction Code. That doesn’t mean changing your design — it means a Performance Solution: an approved way of meeting the Code’s requirements a different way.

I’m a registered architect in Tasmania and I work with these every day. I know the Code, the practical building side, and how to get a Performance Solution accepted by your building surveyor — so your project keeps moving instead of stalling.

What I can help with

  • Alternative materials and products — getting non-standard, new or sustainable materials approved when the Code doesn’t yet recognise them

  • Tricky sites — steep, sloping or reactive-soil blocks where the standard structural rules don’t fit

  • Bushfire and boundaries — alternative construction in bushfire-prone areas and for building close to a boundary

  • Energy and condensation — meeting the requirements another way when the standard rules can’t be met (a real issue in Tasmania’s climate)

  • Light, space and ceiling heights — rooms, windows and ceiling heights that don’t quite meet the standard minimums

  • Stairs and balustrades — non-standard stair, handrail and balustrade designs

  • Renovations, extensions and heritage — working with an existing building that can’t meet today’s standard rules

  • Waterproofing, decks and wet areas — alternative detailing for balconies over living spaces, wet areas and similar

  • Pools, sheds and decks — barrier, safety and structural solutions for outbuildings and pools

Frequently asked questions

What is a Performance Solution?

It’s a way of meeting the National Construction Code’s requirements differently from the standard ‘Deemed-to-Satisfy’ rules. The Code still has to be satisfied — a Performance Solution just gets there another way.

Does my project need one?

Only if part of the design doesn’t meet the standard rules.

Will it cost more or hold up my build?

Usually the opposite. A Performance Solution can save a costly redesign and keep your approval moving — as long as it’s documented properly up front.

Who has to approve it?

Your building surveyor. I prepare the report and evidence so they can assess and sign off, and bring in specialists like a fire engineer if they’re needed.

When should I get you involved?

As early as possible — ideally at the design stage. The sooner a non-compliance is spotted, the easier and cheaper it is to solve.
